What is Gola Bazar?

Gola Bazar is a market town in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, pincode 273408. If you live in one of the villages around it, you already know what it is โ€” the place you go when you actually need to buy something.

It sits about 54 km from Gorakhpur city, along the Kauriram road, near the Saryu (Ghaghra) river that separates Gorakhpur from Azamgarh. That distance is the whole reason the market exists. Going into Gorakhpur city for a saree or a mobile phone means most of a day. Gola Bazar is close enough to go, buy, and be home by evening.

On Google, the market itself is rated 4.1 out of 5 from 2,931 reviews โ€” which is a lot of people for a town this size, and tells you how many families depend on it.

The market is built around a few chowks

You do not need a map here. People give directions by landmark, and everything sits within a couple of kilometres:

If someone tells you "Chand Chauraha ke paas", that is a real address here. That is how the town works.

Gold is what Gola Bazar is really known for

The sarrafa mandi is the heart of it. There are more than twenty jewellers working in and around Purab Sarrafa Mandi, Main Chowk and Madria โ€” an unusual number for a town this size.

There is a reason for it. In a farming area, savings have always gone into gold after the harvest. When one family sells, another buys. And because so many jewellers sit in the same few lanes, people come from surrounding villages knowing they can compare four or five shops in one afternoon instead of trusting one. The shops draw the crowd, and the crowd draws more shops.

One wedding keeps half the market busy

This is the part outsiders miss. A wedding in this area is not one purchase โ€” it is the whole market at once.

The jewellery comes from the sarrafa mandi. The sarees and the family's clothes come from the shops at Chand Chauraha and Madria. The tent, the mandap and the lighting come from a tent house near Sankat Mochan Mandir or Police Chowki Road. The bridal makeup comes from a cosmetics shop on Barhalganj Road. The photographer is usually from Chand Chauraha.

All of that within about two kilometres, in shops that have known each other for years. Wedding season and festival season are what carry this market through the year.

What else you can get here

Almost everything you would otherwise go to Gorakhpur for:

A market town that is changing

Anyone who has lived here a while can see it. Kirana shops where you asked the man behind the counter are becoming stores you walk into and pick things up yourself. Single-item electronics sellers have become showrooms with financing. Nearly every shop now takes UPI. There are Jan Sewa Kendras for Aadhaar and PAN work that people used to travel to the city for.

Gola Bazar is not a village market anymore, and it is not a city. It is a working market town โ€” and for the villages around it, it is the whole shopping district.
